Apartment complex for homeless opens in South Bend
SOUTH BEND (WSBT) - A new $5-million apartment complex for the homeless is open in South Bend.
There are 32 one-bedroom units at Oliver Apartments. It also has a cafeteria, community room and a shared laundry.
It was designed to help break the cycle of homelessness.
Right now, 17 people have signed leases and are paying a small portion of the rent.
"You know, [I] don't what it’s like to have a home. You know I’ve been on the street, I’ve been under the bridge, you know, 10 below, 15 below. You know don't know what it really means, you know, to see the people here, see the twinkle in their eye now that they have a home,” said Harry Zazell.
Construction started on the Oliver Apartments complex in 2016 and wrapped up last fall.
Private funding and federal tax dollars helped pay for the apartments.
