Boy sent home from private school due to dreadlocks
A 6-year-old boy with dreadlocks was denied entry to a private Christian school in Florida this week because of his hair style, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Clinton Stanley Jr. was set to start first grade at A Book’s Christian Academy in Apopka, just north of Orlando.
“I respect their rules, but it’s not right,” the boy's father, Clinton Stanley Sr., told the Sentinel. “Allow kids to come as they are. You are a Christian school. In the Bible it says, come as you are. You deny a kid an education on his hair?”
He says he believes there is an element of racism to the decision to keep his son out of class.
School administrator Sue Book told the Sentinel that the school's policies have always required short hair, and that the backlash against the academy is unfair.
Stanley Sr. posted a video to Facebook on Monday showing his son's reaction to the situation, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
The family has since enrolled the boy in a local public school, instead.
