Tennessee mom left baby in hot car to have 'one drink' on National Tequila Day, police say

A Tennessee mom is accused of leaving her baby inside a hot car in 92-degree weather while she went inside a restaurant for one “drink."

Rachel Vanwagner, 26, is charged with child abuse and neglect. The charge stems from an incident on June 24, an indictment obtained by FOX 13, said.

Two people walking in the parking lot heard a baby crying and called police. Officers responded to the restaurant in Arlington and saw the baby was in the backseat of a car that wasn't running.

The affidavit said the car's doors were unlocked and the windows were partially down. Officers were able to rescue the baby and its mom came running out of the restaurant with no shoes on saying, she had only been inside for 30 minutes for "one drink."

Police said Vanwagner was aware she left he child inside the vehicle with the engine turned off.

Vanwagner was then arrested and the child was placed int he care of a family member.
