MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WSYX/WTTE) – A 3-year-old girl's parents are seeking answers after the the child was unconscious for more than 20 hours following an incident at a South Carolina daycare.

According to Christina Byrd, she received a phone call from Bright Beginning daycare that her daughter, Melissa, fell from the bottom of slide and busted her lip, WMBF reports. She then went to pick up her daughter, but saw her injuries were much worse and took her to the hospital.

Her daughter was unconscious for 20 hours in the hospital, and if she didn't take action herself, the injuries could have been much worse, Byrd told WMBF.

"About five minutes after a CAT scan, she fell asleep and became very lethargic. At this point, she couldn't talk or walk. She fell asleep and didn't wake up ... until the next afternoon," Byrd said. "This happened probably about 7 o'clock that evening and she didn't wake up until the next afternoon. The only way we could get her to respond was pressure points on her feet."

The incident captured on surveillance video, shows the 3-year-old falling off the top of the playground equipment, several feet above the ground. A worker was not aware of the incident until another child saw the girl on the ground and went to help.

When the father went to review the video at the daycare, Byrd said two Myrtle Beach police officers waiting "out of protection" for the owner." They said the "incident didn’t happen the way the teacher told her," Byrd told a reporter.

WMBF says the daycare staff has refused to comment on the incident.
