Mail Fail: ABC 6 demands action after repeated mishaps with mail deliveries
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Jerry Durre, of Gahanna, put a 30-day hold on his mail when he went to visit his son in Scottsdale, Arizona. But when he got back, the mail bin was empty and the mail clerk had no explanation.
"They went back and checked again," said Durre. "(They said) 'we have no more mail for you.' (I asked) 'well, what happened to it?' (They said) 'I have no idea.'"
Durre pressed for answers.
"Each time we would get the same sympathy, 'oh, I'm terribly sorry this happened,'" he said. "'We're going to get to the bottom of it. We'll call you back.' To this date, no one has called me back."
Then, several weeks later, a Gahanna post office supervisor called him.
"She said 'as near as we can figure out, it was shredded and we're sorry.'"
He's not alone. Over the past year 6 On Your Side has received dozens of complaints: everything from no mail to the wrong mail.
Durre said it is unacceptable.
"You depend on the post office. All of our lives, we've depended on the post office. We all do. We don't think twice about it. The mail is just always there. Then one day, it isn't there."
Durre said he won't be making the same mistake again.
"Have your neighbor pick up your mail," he said. "Don't trust it to the post office."
