Training Ohio sheriffs to avoid misuse of tax dollars

Auditor of State Dave Yost warned Ohio sheriffs against potential misuse or abuse of tax dollars in the Furtherance of Justice Funds and other outside bank accounts.

ABC 6 On Your Side examined several of those accounts held by Ohio prosecutors and sheriffs meant for crime fighting, continuing education and investigations. However, questionable expenses were uncovered including lavish meals, expensive or extended trips and missing continuing education credits.

Yost's presentation is training aimed at avoiding pitfalls, documenting expenses and preventing special reviews, audits or accusations of wrongdoing.

"It's really, really important that they're thinking about the limits and trying to do the right thing," Auditor Yost said. "My best hope is that I would never again have to issues a finding for recovery for the use of the Furtherance of Justice Fund."

He called the funds 'dangerous' if the accounts are not used for their intended purpose.

Right now, a review of the Athens County prosecutor's accounts is ongoing by the auditor of state's office prompted by the 6 On Your Side investigation.
