Two local high school students’ time spent on the golf course is paying off in a big way.

Hilliard Davidson senior Ryder Wilson and St. Charles’ Sam Martin both caddy at the Scioto Country Club. The pair earned full-ride scholarships to Ohio State without having to swing a club.

Martin and Wilson are two of the 24 Ohio students awarded the Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholarship, a full housing and tuition scholarship.

The grant is awarded to caddies who obtain a strong record, academic excellence, demonstrate financial need, and outstanding character, according to the foundation’s website.

The two caught wind of the opportunity from the club’s caddie masters, Jason Dick and Joe Murray.

“I genuinely believe this is the single greatest scholarship there is, and it’s not just because they get a full tuition full housing scholarship for four years, it’s because what the Evan Scholarship program creates in terms of human beings,” Murray said.

“It’s about their outcomes, about what they produce at the end of school. They are not going to know the full value of this scholarship until they’re in their 30’s, 40’s, ad 50’s. It gives me chills to think about what’s ahead for these guys.”
